UNDERSTANDING CLEAN SOIL

What Is a Clean Soil Dumpster?

A clean soil dumpster is specifically designed for disposing of pure, uncontaminated dirt from excavation, grading, trenching, and foundation work. Unlike general debris dumpsters that accept mixed waste, a clean soil dumpster is intended for dirt only — and the load must be at least 95% pure soil.

This purity requirement exists because clean soil is recycled at specialized facilities that only accept uncontaminated earth. The soil is repurposed as fill dirt for other construction projects, daily cover at landfills, or grading material — keeping it out of landfills and reducing disposal costs.

Because clean soil disposal is significantly cheaper than mixed waste, we pass those savings on to you: no weight limit on our 10-yard dumpsters. Soil is incredibly heavy — a single 10-yard load can weigh 10–14 tons — but you won't pay overage charges. Fill it up and we'll haul it away.

Our clean soil dumpsters come with a 3-day rental period, which is perfect for excavation projects that generate large volumes of dirt quickly. Need more time? Additional days are available at $49/day.

ACCEPTED MATERIALS

What Qualifies as Clean Soil

The following materials are accepted in a clean soil dumpster. Your load must be 95% pure to qualify for the $599 clean soil rate.

Accepted Soil Types

  • Excavated dirt and earth
  • Topsoil
  • Fill dirt
  • Clay
  • Sand (clean, uncontaminated)
  • Subsoil from foundation or trenching work

95% Purity Requirement

Your load must be 95% pure soil. That means: no rocks larger than 3", no grass or sod, no gravel, no wire mesh, no wood, no garbage, and no organic matter. Small amounts of naturally occurring small stones are acceptable.

NOT ACCEPTED

What Does NOT Qualify as Clean Soil

The following materials are not accepted in a clean soil dumpster. If your dirt contains any of these, consider our other dumpster options.

Does Not Qualify

  • Dirt with rocks or gravel mixed in
  • Dirt with concrete chunks
  • Dirt with grass, sod, or roots
  • Contaminated soil (chemicals, oil, fuel)
  • Dirt with construction debris mixed in
  • Soil with wire mesh or rebar
  • Dirt with wood, stumps, or organic matter

💡 Better Options

  • Dirt with rocks/gravel/concrete?
→ Use Mixed Materials dumpster ($750)

  • Dirt with grass/sod/roots?
    → Use Green Waste dumpster

  • Mixed construction debris?
    → Use General Debris dumpster

⚠️ Contamination Fee Warning

If your load is not 95% pure clean soil, a contamination fee of $125–$150 will be applied. The load will need to be diverted to a mixed materials facility at higher disposal rates. To avoid this fee, ensure your soil is free of rocks, gravel, grass, debris, and any other contaminants before loading.

FAQ'S

Clean Soil Dumpster Questions

Clean soil is pure, uncontaminated dirt from excavation, grading, or trenching projects. It includes excavated earth, topsoil, fill dirt, clay, clean sand, and subsoil. The load must be 95% pure — no rocks larger than 3 inches, no grass, gravel, wire mesh, wood, garbage, or organic matter.

Clean soil is recycled at specialized facilities that only accept uncontaminated dirt. When soil is mixed with rocks, gravel, grass, or debris, it must be processed at a different (more expensive) facility. The 95% purity requirement keeps disposal costs low, which allows us to offer no weight limit at just $599.

If your load contains contaminants (rocks, grass, gravel, debris), a contamination fee of $125–$150 will be applied because the load must be diverted to a mixed materials facility. To avoid this fee, make sure your soil is clean before loading. If you know your dirt has mixed materials, consider our Mixed Materials dumpster at $750 instead.

Soil is extremely heavy — a 10-yard dumpster of dirt can weigh 10–14 tons. Larger dumpsters would exceed the safe weight capacity of our trucks and road weight limits. A 10-yard is the largest size we can safely haul when fully loaded with soil.

No! Clean soil dumpsters have no weight limit. Fill the 10-yard dumpster to the brim with dirt and we'll haul it away — no overage charges. This is because soil is priced by volume, not weight.

No. Soil mixed with concrete does not qualify as clean soil and will incur a contamination fee of $125–$150. If you have both soil and concrete to dispose of, you'll need separate dumpsters or use our Mixed Materials dumpster at $750.

A fully loaded 10-yard dumpster of soil typically weighs between 10 and 14 tons (20,000–28,000 lbs), depending on moisture content and soil density. This is why we only offer 10-yard dumpsters for soil — larger sizes would be too heavy to transport safely.

Fill dirt is a type of clean soil. Both refer to uncontaminated earth, but "fill dirt" specifically means soil used to fill holes or level ground. For our dumpster rental purposes, fill dirt, topsoil, excavated earth, clay, and clean sand all qualify as clean soil as long as the load is 95% pure.

Small rocks (under 3 inches) naturally mixed in with soil are acceptable in small quantities. However, loads with significant amounts of rocks, gravel, or stones larger than 3 inches do not qualify as clean soil. Use our Mixed Materials dumpster instead to avoid contamination fees.

Yes! We offer same-day delivery for most Bay Area locations when you book before noon. Excavation projects often need dumpsters on short notice, and we're set up to accommodate that. Call us at (510) 650-2083 or book online for fast delivery.
